A Place at the Edge
I did not leave. I couldn't.
Her command still hung in the air like something physical, pressing against my chest, settling into my bones. The door behind me remained open for a moment longer… then closed with a quiet finality that made something in me tighten.
"Stay."
It wasn't a suggestion. It wasn't a kindness. It was a boundary drawn around me.
I stood there, unsure where to put my hands, where to look, how to breathe without doing it wrong. Her chamber felt different at night. Larger. Quieter. The flickering candlelight softened the hard edges of everything, but it didn't make it warmer. Nothing in this place was warm.
She moved without looking at me.
The sound of silk brushing against itself was soft, deliberate. Red against shadow. I tried not to stare, but my eyes kept drifting back to her. Not because of the way she looked, but because of how she occupied the space. Even without armor, without command, without the camp around her..she still felt like something I wasn't allowed to reach.
"Closer."
My body reacted before my mind did. I stepped forward, each movement measured, careful, as if the floor itself might betray me if I moved too quickly.
"Not there."
I stopped immediately.
Her hand lifted slightly, barely a gesture, but enough.
"Here."
Closer. Too close.
I stepped again, until I could feel the subtle shift in the air around her. Not warmth. Never warmth. Just… presence. I lowered my gaze.
"Look at me."
I did.
And immediately regretted it. Not because of anger. Not because of punishment. Because she was watching me too closely. Not like a commander. Like she was trying to understand something she didn't quite trust.
"You hesitate when you move now."
My throat tightened. "I don't want to make mistakes."
"That is not why."
Her voice was quiet, but it landed heavier than anything shouted.
"You hesitate because you are thinking."
I swallowed. That was worse.
"I thought that was what I was supposed to do."
Her eyes narrowed slightly. Not in anger. In correction.
"You think because I have allowed you to remain… that you are meant to understand."
I didn't answer. I didn't know how to.
She stepped closer. One step. That was all it took. Her hand rose, not quickly, not harshly, and then her fingers were at my jaw, lifting it just slightly so I couldn't look away.
"You are not here to understand yet."
Her thumb pressed lightly against my cheek, just enough to remind me of the earlier strike. It still burned. Still lingered.
"You are here to learn your place."
My chest tightened. I nodded.
"Yes."
Her hand lingered a second longer than necessary. Then released.
"Remove your boots."
I froze. Just for a second. That was enough. Her eyes sharpened.
"Now."
"Yes."
I bent quickly, fingers fumbling slightly as I pulled them off, setting them aside carefully, as if even that could be judged.
"Stand."
I straightened immediately.
She turned away from me then, moving toward the bed. It was too large for one person. Too deliberate. Everything about it felt like a statement I didn't understand yet.
"You will sleep here."
My breath caught.
"On the edge."
The clarification came without her turning.
"You will not move closer than I allow."
I nodded quickly. "Yes."
"You will not speak."
"Yes."
"You will not mistake this for comfort."
That one hit differently.
"…yes."
She finally looked at me again.
And for a moment..something shifted. Not softer. Not kinder. But… quieter.
"Come."
I hesitated again. Damn it.
Her gaze flicked down.
"You are doing it again."
"I'm sorry."
"Stop saying that."
The words weren't harsh. They were worse. They were tired.
I stepped forward and moved to the edge of the bed, sitting carefully, unsure how much space I was allowed to take. The fabric beneath me was softer than anything I had felt in weeks. It made my body feel heavier. Like I didn't belong on it.
She moved around the other side. Slowly. Deliberately. Then sat. Not close. Not far. Just enough distance that I was aware of her. Constantly.
"Lie down."
I obeyed. Carefully. Rigidly. Every part of me tense, waiting for correction. The silence stretched. Long. Uncomfortable. My eyes stayed open. I didn't dare close them.
"Breathe."
I hadn't realized I wasn't. I forced myself to inhale slowly. Then again. Then again.
"You are afraid."
It wasn't a question.
"Yes."
"Of me?"
I hesitated.
"…no."
That wasn't entirely true.
Her gaze shifted slightly, studying me again.
"Then what?"
My chest tightened. The words came before I could stop them.
"Of being alone."
Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. I expected a strike. A correction. A dismissal. Instead, she leaned back slightly, her gaze drifting toward the ceiling.
"Syrel's sister was like that."
The name hit me immediately. My chest tightened again.
"She did not like being alone."
Her voice had changed. Not softer. Just… less sharp.
"She followed people."
I turned my head slightly, just enough to see her.
"To stay close to them."
A pause.
"She died because of it."
My throat closed.
"I don't want to.."
"Then don't."
The interruption was immediate. Firm.
"You do not become her by feeling the same things."
Her eyes shifted toward me again.
"You become her if you act on them without thinking."
I went still.
"That is what you are learning."
Silence settled again. But it felt different now. Not empty. Just… controlled.
I stared at the ceiling, trying to slow my breathing, trying to understand what I was supposed to do with any of this.
Then..quietly..without thinking..
"Aunty…"
The word slipped out before I could stop it. Everything in the room stopped. Not loudly. Not suddenly. Just… completely. My chest dropped. I turned my head slightly toward her. She hadn't moved. Not yet.
"Say that again."
My throat tightened.
"I didn't mean.."
"Say it."
Her voice was calm. That made it worse.
"…aunty."
The strike came instantly. Sharp. Clean.
My head snapped to the side, the sting exploding across my cheek as I sucked in a breath I couldn't control. I pushed myself up slightly.
Her hand was already there, gripping my jaw, forcing me back down.
"You do not name me like that."
Her voice was low now. Dangerous.
"I don't have anyone.."
"That is not my concern."
Her grip tightened.
"You do not take titles that are not given."
My chest tightened painfully.
"I just thought.."
"You thought."
The word cut. Again.
"You are not in a position to think what I am to you."
My vision blurred slightly.
"I wasn't trying to.."
"You were trying to make this easier."
She leaned closer. Too close.
"You do not make this easier."
My breath shook.
"You endure it."
The words landed heavy. Final. Her grip loosened. Then released. I stayed where I was. Frozen. My cheek burning. My chest tight.
"You will remain here tonight."
Her voice returned to its earlier calm. As if nothing had happened.
"You will not speak again."
I nodded quickly.
"Yes."
She lay back, turning slightly away from me. Ending it. Just like that. I lay there. On the edge. Barely breathing. Barely moving. The space between us felt like a line I couldn't cross. Would never be allowed to cross. And yet..I wasn't alone.
Hours passed. I did not sleep.
I told myself I would. That I should. That if I stayed still long enough, quiet enough, my body would eventually give in and drag me under.
It didn't.
The bed was too soft. The space too close. The silence too loud.
I could feel her. Not touching. Not moving. But there.
Every shift of fabric, every measured breath, every slight adjustment of her weight carried across the space between us like a reminder.
You are here. You are not alone. Do not forget why.
My eyes stayed fixed on the darkness above. I counted breaths. Lost track. Started again.
At some point I closed my eyes. Not to sleep. Just to stop seeing.
A sound. Soft. Close.
My eyes opened instantly. I hadn't moved. Neither had she. But she was awake.
I didn't need to look to know it. The rhythm of her breathing had changed. Slightly. Controlled. Aware.
"You're still thinking."
My chest tightened. I hadn't realized she would speak again.
"I'm trying not to."
The words came out quieter than before. More careful.
"That is not the same thing."
Silence followed, but it wasn't empty.
"What are you thinking about?"
I hesitated. Of course I did.
"Answer!"
"I don't understand how to exist here."
The truth slipped out again. Too easily. Too honestly. The bed shifted slightly. Not closer. Just enough to remind me she had moved.
"You exist."
"That's not the same."
Another silence, longer this time.
"You are looking for rules that will make this simple."
My throat tightened. "Yes."
"There aren't any."
That didn't help.
"You will fail."
I closed my eyes again.
"You will be corrected."
My jaw tightened.
"And if you learn…" her voice lowered slightly, "…you will survive."
That word again. Survive. Not belong. Not earn. Not be accepted. Just survive.
My chest felt heavier.
"Is that all this is?"
I shouldn't have asked. But I did.
Silence.
Then, unexpectedly..
"No."
My eyes opened. She hadn't turned. Still facing away.
"Then what is it?"
Another pause. Longer this time.
"This place…" her voice slowed, measured, "…is built on loss."
The words settled slowly.
"Everything you see here..everything you think is strength..comes from something taken."
Her voice hardened again.
"You are not different."
That landed harder than I expected.
"You think you are alone because you lost something. You are not."
Silence.
"Then why does it feel like I am?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
This time she turned. Slowly. Her eyes met mine in the dark.
"Because you haven't learned what to do with it."
Her gaze held mine, unmoving.
"Loss is not something you fill. It is something you carry."
My breath caught.
"And if you carry it wrong… it will destroy you."
My chest felt tight again. Too tight.
"I don't know how to carry it."
The admission felt smaller this time.
"You will."
Not comfort. Not reassurance. Expectation.
Silence returned, heavier now.
I watched her for a moment longer, then carefully turned my gaze away, back to the darkness above.
My body finally began to give. Slowly. Reluctantly. The tension eased, just slightly. My breathing slowed. For a moment I thought I might actually sleep.
Then..
"Do not mistake this."
My eyes opened again.
Her voice had changed. Cold again. Controlled.
"This is not closeness."
My chest tightened.
"This is discipline."
The words settled like weight.
"You are here because I allow it."
I swallowed.
"And if you forget that… you will not be here again."
I nodded instinctively, even though she couldn't see it.
"Yes."
Silence followed, final this time.
And slowly, despite everything, my body gave in. Not comfort. Not safety. Just exhaustion.
Then morning came too quickly.
The light filtered in faintly through the narrow windows, pale and cold. I woke before she spoke. Before she moved.
My body felt wrong. Heavy. Slow. For a moment I forgot where I was. Then I felt it again. Her presence. I went still. She was already awake. Of course she was.
"Get up."
The words came immediately. No hesitation. No softness.
I moved fast. Too fast. My balance faltered slightly as I stood from the edge of the bed.
"Careless."
The word hit instantly.
"I.."
"Do not speak."
I closed my mouth.
She stood. The red silks falling naturally around her as she moved, controlled, effortless.
"Today… I correct you myself."
My stomach tightened. Training. Her training. That was worse. Much worse.
I nodded.
"Yes."
Her gaze lingered on me for a moment longer. Then she turned.
"Move."
I followed. Of course I did.
Out of the chamber. Back into the cold corridors. Back into the world that had never stopped turning.
But something had changed. Not in the camp. Not in her. In me. Because for one night, I had been allowed close. And now..I would pay for it.
I followed her through the corridors without speaking. I didn't need to be told to stay close. My body had learned that already. One step behind. Not beside. Never beside.
The camp felt different in the early light. Quieter, but not calm. There was a tension in the air I hadn't noticed before. Movements were sharper. Voices lower. Even the Rangers we passed didn't look at me the same way.
Or maybe I was just noticing it now.
She didn't slow.
We reached the training grounds and she stepped into the open space without turning back, as if she already knew I would follow.
"Stand there."
I did.mImmediately. My legs still felt heavy from the night. My head slow. My body not ready.
That didn't matter. It never mattered.
She drew her blade. Not with speed. Not with force. But with that same quiet precision that made everything feel final before it even began.
"Show me what you learned."
My grip tightened around the practice blade they had left for me.
I raised it. Too slowly.
Her eyes flicked to my hands.
"Again."
I adjusted. Breathed.
Tried to remember Shaedra's corrections. Syrel's quiet guidance. The way they had moved. The way they had felt when they stood close.
I stepped forward. Struck. Too wide. Her blade met mine instantly. The impact rattled through my arm.
"Wrong."
She moved. One step. And suddenly she was inside my guard. The flat of her blade struck my ribs. Hard.
My breath left me in a sharp burst as I staggered back.
"Again."
No pause. No explanation. I forced myself upright. Raised the blade again. This time I moved faster. More controlled. Trying to think less. Trying to feel…
Her blade slipped past mine. Tapped my throat. Light. Precise.
"You are still thinking."
My chest heaved.
"I.."
"Again."
I moved.
Again.
Again.
Each time I corrected something. Each time she removed something else. My stance broke. My timing slipped. My grip tightened too much. Not enough. Too slow. Too careful. Too afraid.
Every mistake was met instantly. A strike. A correction. A reminder.
She didn't raise her voice. Didn't need to. Her blade spoke for her.
Minutes passed. Or hours. I couldn't tell anymore.
My arms burned. My breath came uneven. My legs felt unstable beneath me. But she didn't stop.
"Again."
I stepped forward, misjudged the distance and she moved faster this time.
Her blade knocked mine aside completely. Her hand struck my shoulder. I dropped to one knee before I could stop myself. The blade at my throat again. Closer now. Not touching. But close enough that I could feel it.
"You break too easily."
The words weren't cruel. They were worse. They were certain.
"I'm trying.."
"Stop saying that."
My jaw tightened.
"I don't know how to do it right."
Silence.
For a moment I thought she would strike me again. Instead..she lowered the blade. Slowly.
"You do not learn by wanting it."
Her eyes held mine.
"You learn by surviving it."
My chest rose and fell unevenly.
"I am surviving."
"No."
Her voice sharpened just slightly.
"You are enduring."
The distinction hit harder than any strike. She stepped back.
"Stand."
My legs trembled as I pushed myself up. I felt smaller now. More exposed. Like everything I had thought I was starting to understand had just been stripped away again.
"Again."
I raised the blade. My arms felt heavier. Slower. But I moved anyway. This time..I didn't think. I stepped in. Closed the distance. Too aggressively. Too recklessly.
Her blade turned mine aside..but I didn't pull back. I pushed forward. Forced the space smaller. My shoulder collided lightly with her arm. Not enough to move her. But enough, to break the rhythm.
For a second, just one..her stance shifted. Barely. But I saw it. Felt it. My breath caught.
I pressed again..Her hand struck my wrist. Hard. The blade flew from my grip.
Before I could react, her foot hooked behind my leg..and I was on the ground. Flat. The impact knocked the air from my lungs.
She stood over me. Looking down. Not angry. Not impressed. Just… watching.
"You do not have control yet."
I stared up at her, chest heaving.
"But you are beginning to choose."
My heart pounded. I didn't know if that was praise. Or a warning. Probably both.
She turned away. Just slightly.
"Pick it up."
I pushed myself up slowly, every movement heavier than the last. My fingers closed around the blade again. It felt different now. Not like something I could use. Something I had to survive.
I stood. Raised it again..
BOOOOOOOOM
The horn sounded. Loud. Deep. Violent. It tore through the air like something breaking.
Everything stopped. Not just me. Her. The ground. The camp itself.
The second horn followed. Longer. Urgent. Different.
Her head snapped toward the eastern wall. The stillness in her vanished instantly. Replaced by something sharper. Focused. Alive.
"Stay."
The word came fast. Reflexive. But I was already moving. Because the ground beneath us…shook. Not slightly. Not subtly. It trembled. Deep. Heavy. Like something massive was moving toward us.
The third horn roared across Crimson Veil. This time…there was no mistaking it.
War.
Voices erupted in the distance. Commands. Shouts. Steel. Movement everywhere at once.
I turned toward the east. And saw them. Not clearly. Not fully. But enough. Dark shapes moving through the distant treeline.
Too large. Too many. The trees themselves seemed to shift as they pushed forward. Breaking. Snapping. Advancing.
My breath caught.
Trolls.
Not one. Not a few. An army.
Another sound. From the west. Different. Heavier. Slower. But just as wrong.
The trees there. Shuddered. Bent. Something massive forcing its way through.
Ogres.
Tribes of them. More than I had ever imagined. More than I thought could exist in one place.
Hannah didn't hesitate. Her blade was already sheathed. Her posture already changed. The quiet, controlled presence from the night..gone.
Replaced by command. Absolute.
"Move."
I didn't think.
Didn't hesitate.
I followed.
