The World Watches the Duel

№ 25 of 38

I was not chosen to witness it.

I was assigned.

There is a difference.

The arena was older than the mountain it was carved into. Not shaped by hands, but by

agreement. Stone had been persuaded to remain still here. The wind did not cross the boundary

unless allowed. Sound behaved strangely, flattening as if unwilling to echo.

They told us to stand along the outer terraces. Humans, Elves, a few Beast envoys who

watched from shadowed ledges. No one spoke once the circle was drawn.

I remember thinking how small the arena felt.

That thought did not survive the first step they took.

Adamas entered from the eastern rise, walking alone. No armor. No banner. The blade at his

side did not glow yet. It looked ordinary, which somehow made it worse.

Lucifial’s Avatar did not walk.

It unfolded.

Darkness shaped itself into posture. Armor like layered absence. A face that seemed

unfinished, as if expression had been deemed unnecessary. Where it stepped, the stone did not

crack. It recoiled.

The circle sealed.

Something in the air hardened.

I realized then that this was not combat. It was judgment wearing violence.

A voice spoke, not loud, but everywhere. Not naming rules. Acknowledging them.

The duel began.

Lucifial struck first.

The world did not shatter. That surprised me. The blow was precise. A blade of shadow that cut

toward Adamas’s center with intent that felt practiced, almost bored.

Adamas moved.

Not fast. Correctly.

The strike slid past him, shearing stone behind where he had been. The mountain groaned, but

did not collapse. It had agreed to bear witness.

They exchanged blows that did not look impressive at first. No great explosions. No screaming

light. Just weight. Momentum. The sound of something fundamental being tested.

Then Adamas was thrown back.

He struck the ground hard enough that the impact reached the terraces. I staggered. Others fell.

Lucifial advanced without hurry.

“This is what you defend,” the Avatar said, its voice like layered echoes. “Frail. Temporary.”

Adamas rose.

Blood ran down his arm. It steamed faintly.

He did not answer.

When his blade ignited, it was not dramatic. It was inevitable. Light poured from it the way truth

pours from a long kept promise.

The next exchange cracked the arena.

Lucifial’s blade met Adamas’s spear at an angle, not edge to edge. The force drove the shadow

weapon aside. The sound was not metal. It was something tearing.

Lucifial slid backward, feet cutting lines into the stone. For the first time, it leaned into defense.

Around me, people wept without knowing why.

I felt it then. The pressure. Not fear. Attention.

Something vast was watching through us.

Lucifial summoned power again, deeper this time. The air thickened. The light dimmed. I

thought the duel would end there.

Adamas closed the distance.

When they struck again, the Avatar screamed.

Not in pain. In surprise.

Light tore through shadow. The blade shattered. The Avatar began to unravel, pieces of it drawn

backward toward a crack in the world I could suddenly see.

Adamas stood at the center of the circle, shaking, barely upright. He raised his weapon one final

time.

The blow was merciful.

The darkness collapsed inward. The crack sealed with a sound like a breath being released.

Silence followed. The circle dissolved. No one moved.

Adamas remained standing for a long moment. Then he lowered his blade. The light faded.

Only then did the world resume.

Wind returned. Sound returned. Weight returned.

I realized I had been holding my breath since the duel began.

Someone near me whispered, “Did we just watch a god die?”

An Elven elder answered quietly, “No. We watched a man refuse to kneel.”

Adamas looked toward the terraces.

For a heartbeat, his eyes met mine.

There was no triumph there. Only exhaustion. And something like grief.

That was when I understood. The duel had not saved us.

It had judged us worthy of continuing.

And that, somehow, felt heavier than defeat.
