Chapter VII of 15

Shaedra Nyxthorn

The Squire · Red Rangers · about 7 min

Victory has a smell. I learned that the night the "Thorn Gate" and the eastern walls held. It smelled like burning troll flesh. Like blood steaming on cold iron. Like ale spilled across ancient wood. Like sweat, smoke, and celebration from women who had spent their evening carving living creatures apart and now wished to reward themselves for it.

By the time the gates were secured, the sun had long vanished behind the black trees of Crimson Vale. The returning Rangers came in waves. Some laughing. Some carrying severed troll heads by their hair. Some dragging broken weapons. Some limping. Some bleeding. None complaining. They moved through the camp like returning goddesses of war.

The entire fortress seemed alive. Torches blazed brighter. War drums echoed. Songs in ancient elvish rose from the tavern district. Not beautiful songs. Violent ones. Songs that sounded like sharpened teeth.

I stood outside Hannah's chambers holding my bruised ribs and trying not to vomit.

Her door swung open. Captain Hannah emerged fully armored, her blonde hair damp from a fresh wash, now braided loosely over one shoulder. Her green eyes found me instantly.

I hated how my body reacted before my mind did. I straightened. Stood taller. Fear trained faster than discipline.

"You're late."

I blinked.

"What?"

Her eyes narrowed.

"That was a joke."

I stared at her. She stared back. Neither of us smiled. She handed me a carved metal tray.

"Retrieve my dinner from the tavern."

I accepted it quickly.

"Yes, Hannah."

Her expression darkened.

"Captain."

"Yes, Captain."

She leaned closer.

"And if my food arrives cold…"

Her eyes drifted toward my bruised fingers.

"…I'll break another one."

Then she walked away. Just like that. As if threatening permanent bodily damage was ordinary conversation. Which, unfortunately…here, it was.

The tavern was called "The Bloodroot Hall". Naturally. Because apparently naming a tavern something normal like The Silver Cup would kill these women.

The moment I entered, sound assaulted me. Roaring laughter. Shouting. Tables shaking. Mugs slamming. Songs screamed in ancient elvish. Rangers danced on tables. Others arm-wrestled. One woman was being stitched up while drinking. Another was showing off a troll ear necklace she had apparently made less than an hour ago.

Several heads turned toward me. And the laughter changed. It became sharper. Focused. Predatory.

"The human."

"High-Captain's pet."

"Little prince survived training."

"Barely."

I kept my head down.

"Captain Hannah's dinner."

I said it loudly toward the kitchen.

"I'm here for Captain Hannah's dinner."

The chef, Thalara Vintshade, silently nodded from behind hanging cuts of meat. She began plating the meal. I nearly cried from relief.

Then someone kicked the back of my knees. I hit the floor hard. Laughter erupted. I didn't need to look up. I already knew. Shaedra Nyxthorn.

Her boots stepped into view. Slow. Deliberate. She crouched in front of me. Golden skin. Tattooed arms. Predatory smile. Eyes that belonged to something raised incorrectly by civilization.

"Well."

She whispered.

"The wild beast speaks."

"I need Captain Hannah's dinner." I whisper.

The room laughed. Shaedra looked offended.

"Oh?"

She stood. Grabbed my hair. Dragged me across the tavern floor. My tray clattered away. I screamed. Nobody moved to help. Of course they didn't.

She dragged me toward a massive iron clock mounted on the tavern wall. Its hands ticked loudly. Mockingly. She forced me onto my knees.

"Look."

"What?"

Her grip tightened.

"Look."

I looked. The clock. Nine minutes until Hannah's dinner deadline.

"I need to go."

"I know."

"Please."

"I know."

She smiled wider. Then forced my face toward the clock.

"Watch."

My breathing accelerated.

"Shaedra…please"

"Watch."

Minute hand moved. The tavern roared with laughter. Another minute. Then another. My pulse became violent.

"She'll kill me."

Shaedra leaned close.

"She'll hurt you."

Her smile widened.

"And that brings me such joy."

The final minute passed. The clock hand moved. Late. The tavern exploded with laughter. Shaedra released me.

"Run."

I sprinted. Grabbed the dinner plate. Ran through rain-soaked pathways. Slipped twice. Nearly dropped the tray.

Burst through Hannah's chambers. She was seated at her table. Waiting. Perfect posture. Perfect silence. Perfect rage. I was shaking.

"I…"

She looked at the clock. Then at me. Then at the slightly ruined dinner tray. Then back at me.

"What happened?"

I hesitated. And made the worst possible choice. I told the truth.

"Shaedra delayed me."

Silence. Hannah stood. For one beautiful second I thought she might defend me. Then she walked toward me. Hope is such a stupid thing.

She grabbed my injured hand. And drove a dagger between my fingers into the wooden table. I screamed. The blade stopped millimeters from bone. Food scattered everywhere.

"You allowed another Ranger to control your task."

Her voice was ice.

"That failure is yours."

I sobbed.

"She wouldn't let me leave.."

"Then die trying."

She yanked the dagger free. I collapsed. Bleeding. Shaking. She sat back down.

"Clean this."

I stared at her. She stared back.

"And bring me new food."

By the time midnight arrived, I was barely conscious. I dragged myself into my tiny closet beside Hannah's chambers. My mattress smelled like mold. My hands trembled. Every muscle screamed. I collapsed face-first. Still wearing blood-soaked clothing. I didn't even remove my boots. Sleep hit me instantly.

Then…someone was already sitting in the corner. I froze. Moonlight touched her smile. Shaedra.

She sat casually in my tiny room. Like a demon waiting beside a deathbed.

"You scream beautifully."

I backed against the wall.

"What do you want?"

She stood. Slowly. Her head nearly touched the ceiling.

"What I want…"

She stepped closer.

"…is you."

I swallowed.

"What?"

She crouched in front of me. Every inch of her radiated danger.

"Every night."

Her fingers gripped my jaw.

"You belong to me."

Cold terror flooded my body.

"No."

She smiled.

"No?"

"I'll tell Hannah."

Silence. Then Shaedra laughed, so hard she nearly fell backward. Actually laughed. Tears formed in her eyes. Eventually she leaned close enough for me to smell blood and ale on her breath.

"Oh little prince…"

Her voice became a whisper.

"That is the funniest thing you've ever said."

The door opened behind her. I looked. Relief exploded through me. Hannah stood there. Thank the gods. Thank the…

Hannah looked irritated. Not protective. Not shocked. I stared at her.

"She's in my room."

Hannah looked at Shaedra. Then at me. Then sighed.

"Technically…"

She said flatly.

"…it's my storage closet."

My stomach dropped.

"Hannah.."

"Captain."

"…Captain!"

"She requested nighttime disciplinary rights."

I stared in horror.

"You approved that?"

Hannah folded her arms.

"You called her a wild beast."

I looked between both women in disbelief. Rain hammered softly against the tiny barred window.

"This is insane."

Shaedra smiled.

Hannah's expression remained perfectly calm.

"Yes."

She said quietly.

"It is."

Then Hannah stepped backward.

And shut the door. The lock clicked. I stared at it. Frozen. Surely…surely she would come back. Surely this was another joke. Another lesson. Another cruel scare tactic.

"Hannah?"

Nothing. I rushed forward and pounded against the door.

"Hannah!"

No response.

"Captain!"

My fists slammed harder.

"Please!"

My voice cracked.

"Please don't leave me here with her!"

Nothing. Not even footsteps. Just silence. The kind of silence that confirmed everything. She had truly left. My fists slowly stopped moving. My forehead rested against the cold wood. My breathing shook violently. Then even that began to slow. Something inside me simply…went quiet. Not peace. Something worse. The realization that resistance had become meaningless.

I turned slowly. Shaedra remained seated on my mattress. Watching. Patient. Like she had always known this moment would come. Her cruel smile had softened into something almost tender. Which somehow terrified me more.

"Well?"

I stared at her. My body ached. My hand throbbed. My ribs burned. My face still carried bruises from training. My mind felt hollow. I had nothing left. No threats. No pride. No anger. Even hatred required energy I no longer possessed.

My voice emerged as little more than a whisper.

"…please…"

Shaedra tilted her head.

"Please what?"

I swallowed hard.

I hated how small I sounded.

"…just…"

My lips trembled.

"…be quick."

Her expression changed. For the first time…she looked genuinely surprised. Then slowly, she opened her arms. Cruel. Inviting. Possessive. Like a wolf welcoming wounded prey into its jaws.

I stood motionless for several seconds. Every instinct screamed at me to run. There was nowhere to go. No one was coming. Not Hannah. Not my family. Not the gods. Just her. My legs moved before my pride could stop them. One weak step. Then another. Then another. Until I stood before her. I looked utterly broken.

And she looked utterly delighted.

"Good boy."

I closed my eyes. And in complete exhaustion…in humiliating, defeated meekness..I slowly collapsed into Shaedra Nyxthorn's waiting embrace.

Her arms wrapped around me instantly. Strong. Warm. Terrible. One hand moved into my hair. The other pressed firmly against my back. Holding me there. Claiming me. And as sleep deprivation, pain, fear, and humiliation finally crushed what little strength remained..I began to cry.

Quietly. Pathetically. Into the chest of the woman I hated most. Shaedra leaned down to my ear. And whispered softly…

"There you are."

Darkness took me soon after. And I hated myself most of all for how safe that monster's arms briefly felt.
